The Brain Observatory

The star activity is a neurocognitive experiment that exemplifies procedural memory. We give the "subject" a task that they have never done before (tracing a star by only looking at the mirrored image) and see how many errors they produce. We have them try this multiple times to show how their muscle memory is being used as they improve on this task.

Cuyamaca College

Our booth activity aims to engage participants with Kumeyaay Science, fostering a connection between modern scientific principles and traditional knowledge. The booth will feature two engaging activities, each offering a hands-on experience that brings to life the intersection of indigenous wisdom and contemporary science. In essence, our booth activity offers a glimpse into the wisdom of the Kumeyaay people and demonstrates the relevance of their scientific practices in today's world.

Prometheus Laboratories Inc.

What is the best jellybean for you? Have you ever wondered how doctors figure out what treatment works best for you? Prometheus Laboratories proudly features an interactive booth for children and their families to experience providing precision-guided care. We will showcase how these concepts are used in a real-world clinical laboratory setting using fluorescence, color changing solutions, rainbow density columns, and jellybeans!

Marine Corps Tactical Systems Support Activity (MCTSSA)

In Marine Corps’ operations, electrical energy is indispensable for the functioning of advanced weapons systems and sensitive electronics on ships and during field missions. Our table will demo several "The World's Simplest Motor". Students see how an electric current running through a coiled wire creates a magnetic field. Two magnetic fields, repelling and attracting each other, can be used to convert the electrical energy of the battery into the mechanical energy of a spinning part.

World of Waves, WOW!

The electromagnetic spectrum will be the star of the show as we use demonstrations to illustrate characteristics of light waves such as wavelength, frequency, and amplitude. We will present the ways we use light to understand what's going on inside the 150 M K plasmas we produce in our study of nuclear fusion.

Jacobs Institute for Innovation in Education

STEAM Activities including Origami, Saori Loom Weaving, and Robotics & Coding. Robotics: The students will learn programming robotics and explore coding to move around! Origami Fun: Discover the magic of origami and paper folding! Engage in fun activities to learn how math is actually a part of the art of origami!. Loom Weaving: Come learn about weaving with your very own tiny cardboard loom. So many colors, textures and possibilities! We will do a demonstration with Saori Loom.

NSF Center for Synthetic Organic Electrochemistry

Need a recharge? Build a battery! We want to build voltaic piles with participants- a smaller version of the first battery. Stacking zinc, copper, and paper washers dipped in vinegar, participants can build a battery to light an LED light! This activity lets participants learn about the parts of a battery- two electrodes and an electrolyte, and learn about the concepts of voltage and electrochemistry in a safe and engaging way.

Southwest HS

Mind over Muscle In this experiment, festival participants will use a hand dyanomter to measure your maximum grip strength and relate this to the electrical activity of the muscle. The strength of contraction of a whole muscle is dependent on the total number of muscle fibers involved and can be correlated with an EKG sensor. Participants will test their abilities by using maximum effort to test their grip over time and determine the mean force generated over the time period.
