Two Scientists Walk Into a Bar©—Special Edition!

Two Scientists Walk Into a Bar® is back, with an artistic twist; Two Scientists, Special Edition: A Scientist and an Artist Walk Into a Bar. For this artistic variant on our popular Two Scientists Walk into a Bar program, we invited artists to the mix. Adults 21+ and local scientists will gather to enjoy something we can all enjoy: a beer and good conversation in a local bar. The scientist and the artist will be easy to spot. Just look for the sign that reads: "Ask us anything about science and art!" Date & Time: March 9, 5:30 – 9:30 PM (Times will vary by location). 25 Scientists.

Women in STEM 2019

As part of the 11th Annual San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering, held March 2-10, with more than 60 Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) related events throughout San Diego County, the Biocom Institute is hosting an event geared for middle- and high school-aged girls to celebrate Women in STEM.

General Atomics Energy/Fusion

Interactive booth covering nuclear fusion, states of matter, electricity & magnetism, and electrical energy production. Demonstrations will include neon and argon plasmas, liquid nitrogen rapid phase change, an electromagnetic can launcher, eddy current production with levitating magnets, plus much more. Discussions about the state of fusion research will also take place.

Goldstone Apple Valley Radio Telescope Project

The Goldstone Apple Valley Radio Telescope Project (GAVRT) is a partnership between NASA, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the Lewis Center for Educational Research, a K-12 Charter School in Apple Valley, California. GAVRT trains educators on the basics of radio astronomy, technical topics pertinent to the project’s science observation campaigns, and telescope operations. Once trained, educators schedule time on the radio telescope for their class to collect data on a strong radio source.

Solar Turbines

Interactive and fun booth demonstrating how energy is converted from stored to kinetic, similar to a gas turbine. Energy stored in a balloon is released into a fan, generating kinetic energy. A voltage is generated across the motor leads as the fan spins faster. The hands-on exhibit includes use of a 3D printed mini-turbine model, discussion around power generation through interaction with the Solar Turbines Team, and a cool look into a cutaway turbine engine model. For over 90 years, Solar Turbines has been a leader in energy solutions and advanced manufacturing.
