Music Notes STEM Concert

Started by a group of middle school teachers in Los Angeles, Music Notes specializes in creating educational hip hop songs and videos for all ages. Music Notes will hit the stage at the San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering ready to perform some of their most popular STEM songs, which will be sure to have audience members singing and dancing along.

DPR Construction

We are planning to present a hands-on virtual reality experience (using DPR Construction’s own kid-friendly cardboard headsets) that lets visitors, using their own cell phones, follow a URL to a real 3D Building Information Model hosted in the Cloud. The general experience is meant to demonstrate how technology helps our teams bring 2D construction plans to life. We also have some kid-friendly activities such as scavenger hunts and clash detection searches that we can have them participate in, depending on timing.

Pipette Art: Participants will learn how to use the micro pipette to measure liquids in 50ul to 100ul increments, and learn the importance of this technique in science labs. Center for Synthetic Organic Electrochemistry

How do molecules get made? The CSOE has scientists at Scripps and UCSD who are working on using electrochemistry/battery technology to make molecules. We'd like to demonstrate this cutting-edge technology using color-changing reactions in IKA Electrosyn instruments and discuss the work we are doing at the center. UCSD Biomedical Engineering Society

UCSD BMES will create a model of the cardiovascular system for SDFSE 2023. We will use a system of clear tubing along with red colored water and clear orbeez to simulate the major arteries of the system and red blood cells. We will connect this system to a manual pump for the user to interact with. With each pump, LED lights connected to an arduino will indicate heart rate, blood oxygenation, and fluid flow.

UCSD Bioengineering Graduate Society

UCSD BEGS will present 2 bioengineering demos at SDFSE 2023. The first demo showcases engineering design principles in the form of brainstorming, designing, and building a bacteriophage that will “attack” a bacteria of their choosing. The second demo will focus on tissue properties and structures as it relates to creating solutions for problems in human health. Students will replicate different tissue layers with common household items for bone, skin, and cardiac tissue.

La Jolla Institute for Immunology

We will review how your body develops immunity with antibodies. Visitors will cut out paper antibodies to discuss how they relate to COVID-19 and vaccines. Visitors will construct a replica of a virus to explain the structure of viruses like COVID-19. Separately, we will bring a prepared petri dish sealed with bacteria expressing green fluorescent protein (GFP) contained in a dark box. Visitors will shine a UV flashlight on the dish to see the bacteria glow. We will discuss GFP and immunology.

American Chemical Society Student Affiliates at UC San Diego

We will be doing a demonstration of a chemical reaction commonly known as "Foam Monsters". It uses polyutherane foam which rises and hardens inside a cup, creating a "foamy monster effect". Since 2009 Castle Park High students, with Dr. Pomeroy of UCSD, have learned to produce biodiesel from vegetable oil. Our booth demonstrates the step-by-step process of biodiesel synthesis, discusses the advantages of biodiesel over petroleum and outlines the ease of production. Our booth includes CAICE researchers who provide demonstrations concerning climate change and atmospheric chemistry.
