ART SCIENCE COGNITION: Metaphor Building

ART SCIENCE COMPLEX has originated and designed exercises using drawing and writing to promote latent ability within the brain. Metaphorical thinking promotes both neuroplasticity and "on demand "adult neurogenesis, the mature brain's ability to quickly adapt to novel information and experiential, conceptually driven learning--segue to the generation of new neurons in the hippocampal region, as well their successful integration into the preexisting neuronal network.

Expanding Your Horizons Conference

The Expanding Your Horizons Conference is a unique opportunity for girls in grades 6 through 10 to engage in hands-on workshops in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) led by San Diego’s top scientists, engineers, and specialists. This unique event is designed to foster young girls’ enthusiasm for STEM careers, inform them of professions and opportunities, and encourage them to continue their studies in science and math to reach their goals and objectives.

Women in STEM

This year, as part of the 2018 Festival, we are hosting an event to highlight Women in STEM. On International Women’s Day, March 8th, there will be an informative and interactive event taking place at the Serra Mesa-Kearny Mesa Library from 6-9pm. The event will provide a space for young women to celebrate and exhibit their own achievements and learnings in STEM and to be motivated by a host of women who have moved the needle in STEM.

Two Scientists Walk Into a Bar: Women to the Rescue

What sounds like the beginning of a rather bad joke is actually a fun community program by the Fleet Science Center. During Two Scientists Walk Into a Bar™, local scientists will enjoy something we all do: a good conversation in a local bar. Join them, and ask them anything you want! They'll be easy to spot. Just look for the sign that reads: "We are scientists. Ask us anything!"

We love hearing the questions being asked and seeing pictures of all the fun, so if you participate, be sure to post on social media, and tag the Fleet and use the hashtag #2scientists.

7th Annual Marine Science Day

Marine Science Day is a free showcase of SDSU’s marine lab facility and scientific research for the public, hosted by MEBSA, the Marine Ecology and Biology Student Association. Throughout the day there will be family-friendly activities, research talks given by students and faculty, games, a marine life touch tank, SCUBA gear demonstrations, raffle, and much more!

MESSY SCIENCE

Library NExT’s Messy Science class offers hands-on learning activities, including the opportunity to design structures and test their resiliency. Students explore concepts such as tsunamis, landslides, permafrost, glaciers, and sea level rise. Learn why and how things ooze, what makes an explosion and the hidden reason why some things can spin and others cannot. Come prepared to make a mess.
